Ottery St Mary is a town and civil parish in the East Devon district of Devon, England. The town takes its name from the River Otter on which it stands. The River Otter was named after the Otters which many years ago were found on the river banks. Ottery St Mary stands on the eastern side of the river Otter, from which it takes its name.. OTTERY ST. MARY, a market-town and parish, constituting the hundred of Ottery St. Mary, in the union of Honiton, Woodbury and S. divisions of Devon, 11 miles (E. by N.) from Exeter, and 161 (W. S. W.) from London. This place derives its name from its situation on the river Otter, and from the dedication of its church to the Blessed Virgin.
